Native Community Media Day

November 19, 2018

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the Hoopa Valley Tribal Council in November 2017  proclaimed to make the third Monday of November as Native Community Media Day.   This is a day to acknowledge the value and the work Native People make use of organized media services to share journalistic news, stories of community affair events, of notices, celebrations and connections.  All successful societies used a form of communications, of media to stay together.  To paraphrase a comment by Melodie George-Moore, “News would travel as fast as the rivers flowed, unless one could run faster than the river.  We had ridge runners who ran the ridge trails stopping at the river edge villages along both rivers to share and gather the news.”  Today is the day to think of the many ways we Native Communities have kept up the sharing practice.
