The Alutiiq Tribe of Old Harbor and the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation are among a handful of tribes awarded the first Indigenous Animals Harvesting and Meat Processing Grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The new grant program is part of USDA’s support for tribal food sovereignty and it’s a response to tribe’s requests for the government to help reshape and boost tribal economic food enterprise. We’ll talk with tribes about the importance of meat processing operations in the larger picture of tribal food sovereignty.
