California Indian Day
September 24
The Hoopa Valley Tribe observes the California Indian Day holiday. California Indian Day is the fourth Friday of September. Given that the Hoopa Valley Tribe operates on a four-day workweek, the Tribal Offices observe the holiday.
- First Recognition: The holiday’s roots trace back to 1939, when California Governor Culbert Olson declared October 1 as “Indian Day.”
- Official State Holiday: In 1968, Governor Ronald Reagan established the fourth Friday in September as “California Indian Day,” which later became known as California Native American Day.
