The state of Minnesota is turning over almost two square miles of state park land to the Upper Sioux Community. The historic action is the result of a push by legislators to partially account for the atrocities committed by state and federal officials against the Dakota people that led to war and the mass execution of 38 Dakota men in 1862. It is one of several recent instances of governments, organizations, and individuals facilitating the return of important land to tribal control.
