Radio Free Alcatraz

Today in our 9 AM and 6 PM News Blocks we share a special Native American Heritage Month feature. From the Pacifica Radio Network Archives we hear the first ever Pacifica network wide broadcast from November 22, 1969. The Radio Free Alcatraz news broadcast with John Trudell and other occupiers’ from various tribes. This was also the first Native American live broadcast. In 1972 the FCC issued the first two Native American owned Non-commercial Educational radio licenses. In December 1980 KIDE Hoopa Tribal Radio signed on the air.
